The EME Napoleon cutlery is dishwasher-safe and of high quality. Since the cutlery is made of different materials and consists of two parts (metal and plastic), maintenance is essential. This ensures the quality of the cutlery is preserved, and it remains beautiful. That’s why we’re happy to share the following tips to keep your cutlery looking great or to restore its beauty.

Instructions for washing the cutlery in the dishwasher:

  • Remove food residues before placing the cutlery in the dishwasher.
  • Do not use dishwasher salt when washing the cutlery. If you choose to use dishwasher salt, pay attention to the following: after pouring the salt into the tank, using the funnel, closing the cap, and wiping any spilled liquids with a damp cloth, run an empty washing cycle to eliminate any salt residues, as they could otherwise damage the cutlery during the washing cycle.
  • Place the cutlery in the dishwasher with the handles facing upward.
  • Use neutral, acid-free, and lemon-free dishwasher tablets.
  • Do not wash at too high a temperature.

Are you in doubt? Then simply wash the cutlery by hand.

The metal of the intermediate piece / ornament is corroding. What can I do?

Generally, the drying of moisture can eventually cause spots of corrosion on the intermediate part of cutlery. Nowadays, most cutlery sets are exposed to aggressive dishwasher detergents and long dishwasher cycles, during which plates, various types of cutlery, and pans are washed simultaneously. Chemicals and softening salts thus get the chance to cause stains and corrosion on the cutlery under high temperatures.

If stains or corrosion occur in the dishwasher, there are three causes:

  1. Flash rust: As mentioned, other kitchen tools are often washed together in the same cycle. Iron objects begin to rust over time, and flakes of rust come loose. These rust particles end up on other kitchen tools, including cutlery.
  2. Aggressive dishwasher detergents.
  3. Moisture spots: Moisture can attack weak spots on the cutlery when it is washed in long dishwasher cycles and not dried promptly afterwards.

You can prevent damage to the intermediate piece with the following tips:

  • Avoid washing cutlery together with other iron utensils.
  • Do not use aggressive dishwasher detergents.
  • When the dishwasher finishes, remove the cutlery and dry it thoroughly with a kitchen towel if necessary.
  • Failing to follow dishwasher instructions may lead to discoloration or corrosion of the metal intermediate piece over time.
  • We recommend cleaning the metal intermediate piece regularly with a stainless steel cleaner to prevent discoloration.
  • Do not use salts or water softeners when washing cutlery.
  • A piece of aluminum foil in the cutlery basket or drawer prevents stains or deposits and restores the cutlery's shine.
  • Is the intermediate piece discolored? You can gently brighten it with a scouring pad and some abrasive cleaner. Be careful not to scratch the other metal parts of the cutlery.

There are small white dots / spots in the (mother-of-pearl) colored handle. What should I do?

Sometimes, after a few years, one or more white dots may become visible in the mother-of-pearl colored handle of the cutlery. You can easily remove these by heating the handle above a heat source (lighter). Do not hold it too close to the handle. You can remove any black residue from the flame afterwards with water, soap, and a cloth. The white spots will then have disappeared.

The color of the handle differs from my existing cutlery. How did that happen?

Have you owned cutlery for a long time and recently bought some more? Then it is possible that the new cutlery is sometimes slightly lighter or darker. Over the years, minor changes have been made to the manufacturing process. If you have had the cutlery for a very long time, it is possible that the color has changed slightly. Unfortunately we cannot solve this.
